This epic brooding masterpiece is the last track of Red Hot + Rhapsody: The Gershwin Groove a compilation album released in 1998 produced by Paul Heck of the Red Hot Organisation (RHO) to celebrate the birthday of George Gershwin. This compilation is the twelfth entry from the international organization's Red Hot Benefit Series. As with other compilations toward the series, this release serves as a fundraising tool for the RHO's AIDS awareness efforts other notable acts contributing to the album included Bobby Womack, The Roots, Morcheeba, Duncan Sheik, Natalie Merchant, Jovanotti and a host of others. Sinéad O'Connor, who contributed on Red Hot + Blue (the first album in the benefit series), returned for this album as both a performer and co-producer. "A Foggy Day" is a popular song composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress. It was originally titled "A Foggy Day (In London Town)" in reference to the pollution-induced pea soup fogs that were common in London during that period, and is often still referred to by the full title.
This was his first recorded jazz standard since “Wild Is the Wind in 1976 was The only (released) studio recording that Bowie cut in 1998 Badalamenti had scored David Lynch’s Lost Highway, for which Bowie’s “I’m Deranged” had been used, and David was a fan of Angelo's work
Angelo Badalamenti (born March 22, 1937) is an American composer from Brooklyn, New York, best known for his work scoring films for director David Lynch, notably Blue Velvet, the Twin Peaks saga (1990–1992, 2017), The Straight Story and Mulholland Drive. Badalamenti received the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for his "Twin Peaks Theme", and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Soundtrack Awards and the Henry Mancini Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
