“Strawberry Letter 23” is a soul/funk track most often associated with The Brothers Johnson. The song has a fascinating backstory: It was originally written and recorded by Shuggie Otis in 1971 for his album Freedom Flight. In 1977, The Brothers Johnson recorded their own version, produced by Quincy Jones. it became a massive hit: No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the R&B charts. The title has always raised questions: there are no Strawberry Letters 1 through 22. Shuggie Otis once explained that he was inspired by a series of letters his girlfriend wrote him at the time. She filled them with dreamy, imaginative thoughts and called them strawberry letters. He chose number 23 simply because it sounded more mysterious. This song was on Shuggie Otis 1971 album "Freedom Flight".
